Rengay Through the Seasons #46 Summary

by Masago: Rengay #46 (Jul 13-19, 2008) Summary

Budgie in the Mirror

After the storm...
the ground receives a kiss
from the rose.

Our lovers' quarrel ends —
the make-up smooch begins.

She presses
a tissue between her lips —
lipstick remains.

Perched on a stick —
he pecks at the budgie
in the mirror.

The soccer ball rises —
his first forward heading.

The politician
stops to bless a baby —
soft, pink forehead.

The central theme in this rengay is, of course, "Kissing". The first verse was inspired one day when we were at a garden centre after it had rained hard the previous night and I saw a potted rose that had succumbed to the storm. The image is a personification of kissing followed by the more usual sort of kiss in verse 2. The other verses in the series are meant to provide a variety of other types of "kissing".

Rengay Through the Seasons #46 [1-5]

by Masago: Rengay #46 (Jul 13-19, 2008), Verses 1-5 (of 6)

After the storm... the ground receives a kiss / from the rose.
Our lovers' quarrel ends — the make-up smooch begins.
She presses / a tissue between her lips — lipstick remains.
Perched on a stick — he pecks at the budgie / in the mirror.
The soccer ball rises — his first forward heading.

[A forward heading is hitting a soccer ball with your head toward your opponent's goal. It allows you to gain possession of the ball, pass, set up an attack, score goals and defensively clear the ball from the goal area. The fun part of this verse is that it is his first try at this and instead of bouncing the ball off his forehead, the implication is that it hits him straight in the face, and he metaphorically "kisses" the ball.]

Rengay Through the Seasons #46 [1-4]

by Masago: Rengay #46 (Jul 13-19, 2008), Verses 1-4 (of 6)

After the storm... the ground receives a kiss / from the rose.
Our lovers' quarrel ends — the make-up smooch begins.
She presses / a tissue between her lips — lipstick remains.
Perched on a stick — he pecks at the budgie / in the mirror.

[I received some off-line feedback about the following verse that I posted last night:

Noticed after
arriving home late —
lipstick stains.

It seems that this verse tends to bring down the up-lifting feeling of the previous verse about quarreling lovers making up. I tend to agree so I have therefore replaced it with the "tissue" verse above. Hopefully you too will prefer the replacement.]

Rengay Through the Seasons #45 Summary

by Masago: Rengay #45 (Jul 6-12, 2008) Summary

Pavement Blossoms

City park —
azalea petals among
cigarette butts.

Charred forest remains —
pink fireweed blossoms.

The front lawn,
long and going to seed —
beds of gout weed.

Weathered stump —
a green sprig emerges
from the moss.

A rusted bottle cap —
clumps of brown lichen.

Coloured chalk
blossoms — a flower bouquet
on the pavement.

The central theme in this rengay is "Botanical Beauty Contrasted". Verse 6 was inspired by a dream around the time that the 4th verse had just been written. The haiku inspired from the dream fit so well as the last verse in terms of theme and linking to the first verse that I decided to use it and to write a verse 5 to fit.
