Rengay Through the Seasons #42 Summary

by Masago: Rengay #42 (Jun 15-21, 2008) Summary

The Rainbow Ahead

A hermit watches
drops splash on the surface —
koi's pond.

Out in an evening drizzle —
we stop for fish and chips.

Potato patch —
the sound of pitter-patter
on each leaf.

Sudden downpour —
colouring books opened
on the lawn.

Thunderstorm — my umbrella
opens up all too well.

A rainbow across
the road in front of us —
the storm behind.

The central theme in this rengay is "Rain". Of course rain inevitably falls from time to time but when the storm eventually dissipates, the sun comes out and is a positive force supporting us in our life's journey. The rainbow is a reminder of God's promises.

Rengay Through the Seasons #41 Summary

by Masago: Rengay #41 (Jun 8-14, 2008) Summary

Their Points

Oh mosquito,
little one in my shower...
cease fire?

A rain drop hits the earth —
the ant changes course.

Hornets under
the back porch — the front
gets busier.

A bee embraces
a rose blossom — the stinger
points skyward.

Sun-facing spider web —
each dew drop, a jewel.

Broad daylight —
a sudden tiny sting,
and no deerfly!

The central theme in this rengay is "Biting Insects". There is also a pattern in that the insects in all the verse are insects that fly, except to two-line verses in which the insects do not typically fly (ant and spider).

Verse 6 describes the experience of feeling a sting or a pinch, looking down and seeing where the deerfly or horsefly had bitten. It is amazing how they can land, bite, take off, and you don't feel a thing till after they've left!

The title "Their Points" has two meanings: their stinging "body part" (that typically is a point), and the idea that the insects make their points by stinging. There is a sense of power in these biters and they are not afraid of big creatures. Whatever these insects do, they sort of make their points.

Rengay Through the Seasons #40 Summary

by Masago: Rengay #40 (Jun 01-07, 2008) Summary

Little Slug

Oh, little slug,
get moving, go on...
a robin's nearby.

Chicken dinner was ordered —
will it come before breakfast?

Railway crossing —
the other side's lineup
grows longer.

Grocery checkout
queue... "price check,
aisle seven!"

Rising price of gas —
sidewalks grow familiar.

Stone wall —
the setting sun's shadow
reaches a ladybug.

The central theme in this rengay is "Slow Movement". I wrote the first verse at a time when I was reading some of the haiku of Issa. I was inspired to write in his style, sympathetic to nature's creatures.
