Rengay Through the Seasons #25 Summary

by Masago: Rengay #25 (Feb 17-23, 2008) Summary

Under the Covers

A school of fish
under the lake ice —
deep winter.

Recess, one hour away —
thoughts of fun and snow.

We come inside
after the bell... the smell
of wet woolens.

Science class —
other guys try burning
more than sulfur.

Mid-term exam week —
my candle lit at both ends.

Under the covers
Saturday morning — thinking
about homework.

The central theme in this rengay, of course, is "School"... a topic I'm sure is near and dear to all of us.

Rengay Through the Seasons #23 Summary

by Masago: Rengay #23 (Feb 3-9, 2008) Summary

Behind the Curtain

The crack of ice
over the sound of a trickle —
frozen waterfall.

Behind the curtain, motionless —
the boy's turn to go on stage.

Ice fishing
all day long — my lunch,
the only bite.

Her friend holds
the half-spud... the needle's tip
sinks through.

A snowboarder plows under —
his partner offers his hand.

Tap-tap, tap-tap —
a woodpecker chips deeper
into the trunk.

The central theme in this rengay is "Out of Sight". Various things are out of sight in each verse: water, boy, fish, needle tip, snowboarder, Insects.

Rengay Through the Seasons #22 Summary

by Masago: Rengay #22 (Jan 27 to Feb 02, 2008) Summary

Smiling Repairman

A mid-winter's eve —
the repairman smiles as he
opens the furnace.

The tooth can be saved... but
a root canal is needed.

Mom succumbs
to her kids' blandishments —
stray kitten.

Homeless vagrant —
a long sermon comes with
the bowl of soup.

The lecture's over at last —
but the prof calls a pop-quiz.

Fifty percent off —
the sales clerk informs us that
the coupon's expired.

The central theme of "Good News, Bad News" was inspired by an incident that happened a couple years back when our furnace started making a loud rattling noise. A repairman came out and informed us that the motor bearings were pretty much shot. The furnace was so old that the cost of repair meant that installing a new furnace made the most sense. It was good news for the furnace company and bad news for us.

A secondary theme is "Authority Figure": Repairman, Dentist, Mother, Preacher, Professor, Sales Clerk.
