Rengay Through the Seasons #28 Summary

by Masago: Rengay #28 (Mar 9-15, 2008) Summary

Low Tide

Longer days —
toys begin to emerge
from the snow.

We scour the beach for shells
and trinkets — low tide.

Past forty —
each morning's combing,
more forehead.

Opening bell —
trading starts lower
yet again.

Spring fashion sale —
in my size, gone!

Sinking sun —
the last rays glimmer
on the tree tops.

Some have pointed out that this rengay touches on the change of seasons, our own mortality, and a negative, entropic sense. The actual theme I had in mind was the idea of "receding" (snow, tide, hairline, stocks, clothes, daylight). And, when you think about it, receding is obviously at the root of these other interpretations.

These take on a greater intensity with your explanation. I especially love that last one - its like the trees are clinging onto the light, unwilling to let it go.

Thankyou for the helpful explanations and links. Newcomer to these forms of poetry, and dabbling on the edge in Gilded Mask blog. Love the subtle play on beachcombing.

emerging
at my age . . .
beats receding

(on being included in an anthology of emerging voices in English language haiku. FYI, I'm 75.)
