by Masago: Rengay #51 (Aug 17-23, 2008) Summary
Bits of Sunset
Summer's end —
covered with a yellow
polka-dot bikini.
Hot-dog... a bite leads to
mustard spots on my shirt.
Somebody forgets
to bring the insect repellent —
mosquito welts.
Ta-ta, ta-ta-ta...
a sapsucker peppers
the birch with holes.
The odd leaf has turned
colour — late summer.
Bits of sunset
through the branches, a dance
on his back.
The central theme of this rengay is "Spots". The "Summer's end" of verse 1, of course, is a play on words. The 'end' being either that of the summer season or that of a young woman named "Summer".

and that`s my favorite verse:
Ta-ta, ta-ta-ta...
a sapsucker peppers
the birch with holes.
I'm seeing spots everywhere I look. No, it's just mustard.
Thank you all very much for your support for this year-long project. This is number #52, the last one in the series and the end of this project. However, I am planning another project... details to follow.
Haiku-shelf: Thanks!

Borut: Thanks so much for your encouragement!
Pat: Thanks!
The sapsucker one reads so well in the mouth. Love it. 'Peppers' is a very well chosen word. The leaf one I really like too - I always wonder if I was a leaf if I would be one of the first to turn, or whether I'd try to hold out longer than all the others, or whether I'd just be lost among the masses.
